On Blindness

by Glyn Cannon (2004)

A co-production with Paines Plough and Graeae.

A serious comedy about the complications of perception and desire.

On Blindness was a co-production between three of the UK's most inspiring and successful theatre companies: Frantic Assembly, Paines Plough and Graeae. Each company has carved its own unique theatrical language, audiences and styles throughout their histories.

The piece was commissioned by Paines Plough and Graeae after a shortened version was performed at Wild Lunch in 2002 (new writing season). The half hour script passed every expectation and resulted in Paines Plough & Graeae offering Glyn his first full length commission to develop the piece. Frantic's Artistic Directors read the script in November 2002 and were blown away by its theatrical and immediate quality.

On Blindness takes a brutally comic swipe at art and sex - charting the relationships of Edward, Maria, Shona and Dan as they win and lose over one turbulent weekend. On Blindness is an intriguing, gritty play about blind people who can see things as they are, and sighted people who can not.

On Blindness was originally written as part of a project which involved disabled directors, writers and performers. The wider philosophy of that project was to explore the different possibilities of theatrical language, signing and voice.

It is one thing to describe your sexual fantasies. It is another to let them be heard.
